4 years ago, the Lord allowed me to launch the Friend to Friend podcast with the help of Jennifer Beil our media director and Mindy Tingson our social media coordinator.

This ministry began as my heart’s desire to partner with like-minded Christians, sharing their testimonies and biblical wisdom to equip and encourage the women of our church. It has been wonderful to see God use and bless my heart’s desire to reach listeners, many of which I will never meet this side of Heaven. We covered a vast array of topics that encouraged and helped ladies for which I am grateful and give God the glory. For me, the season of hosting this podcast has now come to a close, but I pray that Friend to Friend will continue to be a collective resource of help and encouragement for listeners to continue to glean from! Tune in to hear the podcast team say, “Goodbye.”

Motherhood: God’s Greenhouse For Growth. Join me and 5 other guests as we share how motherhood has become a greenhouse of growth – a place of fruit and thorns, sowing and reaping, purging and cutting back. And for what purpose? To be grown in His likeness – our Shepherd and Savior, the Master Gardener, for in leading our children we become students led by His hand.

Friends, in sharing these stories, I hope to give you the opportunity to say, “What?! You too? I thought I was the only one!” You are not alone and when days are long and you don’t feel like you measure up, don’t forget to look up. Look up to our Savior who has promised to equip us for the journey if we will walk in His ways and in His spirit, instead of our tired flesh.  Look behind to younger mothers looking for help and encouragement and look ahead to wiser mothers, further down the road, for the same hope.  And friends, if motherhood is not a road you’re traveling, I hope these stories will give insight for how to pray for those you know doing their best to mother their children well.

As children, we often dream of what our lives will be and make plans for carefully scripted ideals. But we’ve all seen carefully scripted lives go off script – whether through tragedy or even unexpected blessings. When life goes off script, we are quick to wonder, “What is God doing? Why did he allow this?” Trials, especially, remind us that the we are not the author of our own stories. We can be tempted to question,“Is the Author trustworthy?”

In today’s episode, Dan and Janice Wolfe share how God in His goodness took trials that could have destroyed their faith and turned those trials into gifts of grace – drawing them closer into fellowship. Their lives have been touched by the death of a spouse, divorce, and an illness that forever changed their child. The Wolfes testify to the truth that God can truly work ALL things together for our good and for His glory.

In today’s episode entitled, Messy Life: Perfect Peace, you’ll hear Jennifer Skaw’s story of how God has used her mental illness diagnosis to draw her to Himself and into a deep and abiding relationship. My guest, Jennifer, will be sharing her story which includes the topics of both depression and mental illness. She will share her knowledge gained through her own personal experience and countless hours of research on the the topic of mental health. Jennifer’s story is one of hope found in Christ and confidence in God’s Word. It is our goal, as always, that you the listener will find hope for your heart and help from His Word through today’s episode. Happy listening friends!

Parenting is such a gift but it is also not without its trials too. As believers, we know that it is through Christ that God wants to equip us to parent our children well.  Galatians 5 tells us that as Christians we are to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh. Today, my guest Erica Lerisse joins me to share how the Lord is teaching her to parent in His power vs. the strength of her own flesh. We know that like Corrie Ten Boom once said, “I cannot but Jesus in me can!”

Thanks for tuning in today for our second episode of Season 5, themed “I Cannot but Jesus in Me Can,” words that were once spoke by Holocaust survivor and Christian, Corrie Ten Boom. One of the greatest lessons that Corrie spoke of was that because of Christ in her, she was enabled to forgive one of her once Nazi captors. Corrie traveled the world for 30 plus years after the war sharing this lesson of forgiveness made possible through Christ.

As Christians we can become equipped and enabled to extend Christ’s forgiveness to others but then can find it hard to receive that same forgiveness for our own sins and short-comings. We become our own worst enemy held back by guilt and shame. Today, my friend Chris Segers joins me to share her story of overcoming her past and how God has enabled her to live a life of freedom from guilt and shame to love Him and serve others.

During the month of December my husband J.R. often preaches a series of Advent sermons that prepare our hearts so well to celebrate the birth of our Saviour. This past Sunday morning he preached the following sermon, “The Significance of the Swaddling Clothes” depicting the wondrous fullfilment of the prophesied Messiah – the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world. I pray that like me you will find yourself moved to worship our Saviour, a miraculous gift to a sin-cursed people. Happy listening friends! May it bring hope to your heart and help from His Word.

Welcome back listeners! Today begins Season 5 of the podcast! We’ve started this season by inviting Wendy Burks back to the podcast to share the story of Corrie Ten Boom and her courageous witness in the face of evil. Each month after, you can look forward to unique stories of overcoming adversity, healing after an abortion, parenting in the power of the Holy Spirit, one woman’s story of battling mental illness and how to respond when life goes off script. I look forward to sharing these episodes with you – the conversations that I will have with women, who like Corrie Ten Boom can say, “ I cannot, but Jesus in me can!”. Happy listening, friends!

The holidays are quickly approaching and as they do, two words come to mind: hospitality and relationships.  Two words that come with both blessings and burdens. Linda Wilkerson joined me for episode 29 in season 2 for a conversation centered around Hospitality: the Gospel Invites us Home. This episode is full of both practical tips and biblical truth to help prepare your heart to receive guests in your home this holiday season. Opposed to preparing our homes to be seen, It’s a timely reminder of the importance of preparing our homes to serve. Happy listening friends!

The holidays are quickly approaching and as they do two words come to mind: hospitality and relationships.  Two words that come with both blessings and burdens. In season 1 of the podcast, my good friend Julie Tarr joined me to discuss relationships and the topic of “Boundaries and Benefits: God’s Plan for Difficult Relationships.” This holiday season, for some, may include navigating difficult family dynamics. I can assure you that Julie’s testimony and lessons learned will both equip and encourage you as you head to your next family gathering. So perhaps, you’re new to the podcast, missed it the first time around or just need a refresher – we wanted to hit the play button again as we prepare our hearts to give thanks and celebrate our Saviour this season. Happy listening friends!

Motherhood is not for the faint of the heart, nor for those without a sense of humor, but I’m learning that most of all, motherhood is not for the proud Christian: the woman who doesn’t realize how much she needs Jesus. I have learned that motherhood does not fit me when I am not fixed on Christ.

My prayer today is that my testimony will allow you to say, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one?,” a place where C.S. Lewis said friendship is born. I pray that by listening you will be encouraged and that most importantly you’ll see how God is using that “something” in your life to draw you to Himself. And that if you’ll allow it, God will use your “something” to turn you to true Hope found in Christ and His Word.

Have you ever found yourself craving something new? Perhaps a fresh start in a new year, a new job, new relationships or a different season of life? I have often found myself discouraged by outer circumstances – craving something new, yet finding lack in everything around me. I find myself looking for new in all the wrong places.  Like all of humanity, we demand new from life and end up disappointed in the vanity of what we thought would fulfill us…

This past April I was invited to speak at a ladies’ conference in Indiana, hosted by Pastor Wilkerson and his wife Linda. The theme was “Jesus, The Good Shepherd” and I can’t wait to share with you how the Lord used this theme in my own heart as I prepared the lessons that I taught. Today’s episode is the first of those lessons and a reminder from God’s Word that all of the new we crave is found in the only One who can make all things new! Happy listening, friends!

I was so blessed to speak alongside missionary, Mrs. Erica Lerisse. I highly recommend and encourage you to watch Erica’s lessons from the conference on YouTube. I’ll share the links to those videos and the video version of today’s episode in the show notes.

One of the greatest ways we can show gratitude to our pastors is to prepare our hearts to both receive the Word and to serve at church. In doing so, we honor the Lord most of all.

Today’s bonus episode is a recent lesson I taught during our ladies Bible study at SRBC, a lesson that was born out of my own heart’s need to be reminded that prior to stepping into church – I always need a heart prep. Happy listening friends!

Today’s episode features our media director and my good friend, Jennifer Beil. This past spring Jenn was invited to speak to the single ladies during a break-out session at the SoCal Ladies Conference hosted by her home church in California. Whether you are single or married, you’re sure to be helped through Jenn’s lesson on bitterness, “Don’t Bite the Apple.” Happy listening friends!

Today’s epidsode concludes our F2F LIVE 2022 conference sessions. We hope hope that you’ve been encouraged and equipped through this study in Titus and that you will be resolved to be a woman, yielded to her Maker. Remember friends, “I cannot, but Jesus in me can!”

This year we’ll celebrate 4 years as a podcast, a ministry in process and a work that has come a long way! As we head into our 5th season, I wanted to share with you, the listener, how we started and what to look forward to in this next season!

This summer we’re sharing sessions from F2F LIVE 2022 themed Womanhood: Yielded to Our Maker. In today’s episode our guest teacher, Bethlie Young continues our study in Titus.

This summer we’re sharing sessions from F2F LIVE 2022 themed Womanhood: Yielded to Our Maker. In today’s episode, Mindy Tingson, our Social Media Coordinator, who joined us via video from Australia, shares a mini-lesson on “The Mindset of Modesty: Desiring a modesty that is grounded in the fruit of the Spirit.” As women yielded to our Maker, today’s lesson is vital! Happy listening!

This summer we’re sharing sessions from F2F LIVE 2022 themed Womanhood: Yielded to Our Maker. Today’s episode was an exercise designed to prompt us all to look at our lives through the lens of God’s will. If you weren’t able to join us in person , I’d encourage you to grab a pen & paper plate, and get busy thinking. I hope that you too will be able to join us in saying, “Lord, here’s my plate!” Happy listening!

In today’s episode our Social Media Coordinator, Mindy Tingson, joins me to share her story of coming to know Christ as her Saviour. Once deceived by self into believing that she could be “good enough” to earn God’s salvation, Mindy shares how Christ brought her over that barrier to salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone. She also shares how God continues to patiently show her that His love is not something to be earned but a gift to be received. Mindy’s story is a reminder to us all of Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Happy listening, friends!

In today’s episode I’ve asked our Media Director, Jennifer Beil, to interview her parents Lou and JoJo Guarneri. Mr. and Mrs. Guarneri are both native New Yorkers who grew up in NYC and in the Roman Catholic Church. They met while attending the prestigious Stuyvesant High School, with visions of affluent career paths. Pastor Lou went on to attend Columbia University where he played rugby, football and received a degree in chemical engineering. Friends, I can’t wait for you to hear how God met this young couple on their path to success and how He has directed their paths to where they serve today as Pastor and pastor’s wife.  This couple can boldly proclaim, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36) Happy listening!

In today’s episode, my guest Meghann Wineka, joins me to share her story of coming to know Christ after many years of doubt, fear and pride. Thirsty for truth, Meghann allowed God’s Word to correct faulty thinking, transforming her faith from the inside out. Meghan’s journey as a new believer led her to where she is today – passionate about the authority of God’s Word, assured of the ever-present Holy Spirit in believers and confident in the eternal security offered through Christ alone. You’re sure to enjoy, friends! Happy listening!

Today, my friend Tabitha Murdock, missionary to Germany, joins me to share her story of God’s pursuit in her life. If you’ve ever wondered, “Does God see me? Does He really care?,” I can assure you, friend, He does! Tabitha’s story today attests to the pursuit of our Shepherd in finding His lost sheep. We may not always see His hand working in the present but to look back is to see the evidence of His faithful love.  Like the psalmist, may today’s episode prompt you to say, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:”. Happy listening, friends!

Today’s episode #48 is our second episode of Season 4 : Salvation: One Gospel, Different Stories.  The power of the Gospel is seen over and over in the result of a changed life. In Acts chapter 9, the Bible gives us the account of Saul  – a persecutor of Christians – whose encounter with Christ turns him into a preacher of the very Gospel that he sought to silence. A life radically changed.

My guest today, Carol Everett, is one such example of a life whose encounter with Christ produced radical change. Like John Newton, the once slave trader turned abolitionist, wrote when he penned the beloved hymn Amazing Grace, “I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see,” seeing for the first time what she had once been blind to seeing, Carol was confronted with the sin and evil of her lucrative abortion clinic. Once an advocate for pro-choice, Carol’s salvation story resulted in not only her new life in Christ but in life for unborn babies that she now actively seeks to protect. Carol not only seeks to protect unborn lives but to also share Gospel hope with both women and men and help for those recovering from abortion.

Inherit Co.

Tom and Linda Gang of Jackson, OH join me to share how God opened their eyes to their need for a Saviour and how those decisions made an impact on their lives. You’ll hear about their early days of marriage lived without Christ and then how God faithfully walked alongside this couple for 3 1/2 years while one was a believer and one had not yet trusted Christ. Happy listening friends!

Available today! Episode 45 | Seeing Christ In Suffering: Mental Illness & Suicide is our #1 most-listened to episode. As a whole, we’ve seen the rise of fear, anxiety, depression and suicide in our society. Current events have not only served as a catalyst to the furtherance of these issues but has also brought to the surface of many a Christian’s heart a faith strengthened or even a faith questioned. Suffering and trials often result in questions, but may we not be blinded to the hope and help found in God’s Word.

Today, my guest Shelly Hamilton shares how her family has known deep suffering. Through it all she has seen in her Saviour in the midst, so that she can confidently say, “God is only always good!”

In today’s episode, my guest Sherri Patterson and I discuss “The Middle Years: Setting Goals and Letting Go.” The responsibility to guide our children’s hearts wisely and then prepare to see them leave the nest can at times feel a bit overwhelming. But knowing this, that we can have confidence in God’s Word and in His ways will guide us in both setting these goals and in preparing our hearts to let go.  Sherri, with 5 daughters of her own, gives us a glimpse of how this played out in her own home. Happy listening friends!

My husband J.R. recently preached the following message, “The Year of Jubilee,” and I knew immediately that I wanted to share it with you, the listener.  I pray that you will find your greatest hope and help from your personal relationship with God and through the teaching and preaching of your local church. This podcast is meant only to be icing on the cake of that foundation.

20 years ago today, my husband trusted Christ as his Saviour in a small church in Georgia. His life forever changed that day, not only eternally, but also in his own life’s direction.  Now 20 years later, he pastors the church that God called us to plant just 4 years ago. I want to honor my husband and celebrate our Saviour by sharing today’s episode with you!

It is the joy of my life to minister to the one who ministers to our church. To my husband J.R., “Happy spiritual birthday! My life is complete because you said yes to Jesus!

On today’s episode, my guest Theresa Schwenke and I, discuss the topic of divorce. Specifically, how she has found hope and healing from Christ in His Word.  God’s perfect plan is one man and one wife for life, yet we know that because of the hardness of a person’s heart divorce happens and seemingly more frequent today than in times past. Relationships are severed and homes are broken, however God brings to mind two wonderful words, “but God.” Today’s episode is sure to encourage those who may be on this same path and to help equip the friends of those who are hurting, to be a help and not a hurt. Listeners, there are days when I think, “Me? Cultivate a heart for Christ? Bear the Spirit’s fruit and reflect His image? How could I ever? Today’s episode serves to remind us all that, “I cannot, but Jesus in me can.”

On our journey of walking with God, it is so important to find courage from those who have followed Christ also. Today, I’ll share the story of Corrie Ten Boom, a courageous Christian who like countless others can echo the message, “All eyes on Jesus!”

The audio/video of Corrie Ten Boom that was shown during this session from a YouTube video is no longer accessible. However, this similar story excerpt can be searched on other videos and found in her book, Tramp for the Lord.

Feelings can frequently blind us from the truth, prevent us from growing spiritually, and even cause us to harm others with our words and actions. We live in a world that promotes the mantra: “If you feel it then say it, do it and it must be true.” But praise God that as born-again believers we have the Holy Spirit as a guide to help navigate our emotions.

Kayte McCoy joins me to share how God has guided her through emotions that stemmed from abuse as a child and then great loss as an adult. We discuss how through His Word and by His Spirit, God can answer the questions, “ Why do I feel this way? And what do I do with all of these emotions?”

Teen Listeners! Here’s an episode we’ve recorded with you in mind …and perhaps your parents! Dating and purity can be a tricky road to navigate in today’s culture, but thankfully we can look to God’s Word for principles to guide us and to testimonies like that of today’s guest. Whether you parent teens or one day will, minister to teens or are a single person, I promise you’ll be encouraged by Katie’s story.

Remnant Ministries

In today’s episode, Bethlie and I discuss the reality of this aggressive industry in today’s culture, but how we, as Christians, can look to Christ to guard both our hearts and our homes through spiritual and practical safeguards. Although a sobering topic, Bethlie’s kind spirit and consistency to point us to Scripture were both refreshing and encouraging! Happy listening, friends!

For most, A New Year means a new calendar and how quickly the calendar days fill up! Busy days can be defined as blessed or stressed but in order to choose the latter, we must look to the Lord to order each step.

Keep the Heart – Making Bible Study Meaningful

Bonus Episode | Today’s Episode is the second session from our recently hosted Friend to Friend Live Ladies Conference. In this lesson, I share how cultivating a heart for Christ is not without its enemies. The throne of our heart belongs to the rightful King and if we’re not careful, like the children of Israel, we’ll bow down to idols of our past, our upbringing and our culture. God alone is worthy of our worship! The only King worthy of pointing others toward is Christ!

Today’s Bonus Episode is Session 1 of our recently hosted Friend to Friend Live Ladies Conference. Jennifer Beil, our Media Director, shares how cultivating a heart for Christ begins with a relationship with Him, knowing Christ as your personal Saviour. After salvation, Jenn shares how a Christian continues to cultivate a heart for Christ by walking in the Spirit. She lays the biblical foundation for identifying the Fruit of the Spirit in contrast to the rotten fruit of the flesh.

Looking back is often a catalyst for cultivating a heart of gratitude in one’s own heart, and in today’s episode my guest, Kelly Gray, shares stories of God’s faithfulness in both good times and hard times. She points us to a faithfulness that has laid the foundation for a truly grateful heart.

My guest, Linda Wilkerson, joins me as we discuss how hospitality is both a gift we receive and a gift we extend to others. Hospitality comes in many forms – from detailed meal plans and beautifully decorated tables to coffee for mamas and cheerios for kiddos! I’ve found myself enjoying and planning for both settings, and as we head into the holiday season it’s probable that our days will be busy with hospitality. But whether fancy or simple, for a large crowd or just one friend, today’s episode serves to remind us that the heart of hospitality should be to reflect the Gospel. All year round we should open our homes to reflect a selfless love – a love that says, “Welcome home!”

Rachel Wyatt joins me to share the lessons God has taught her since moving to Tanzania, Africa with her husband Jerry. She shares how cross-cultural living has given her a new perspective in many areas of life and I in turn gained a new perspective of how to better support and pray for missionary wives abroad.

Streams in the Desert

Kim Tarr joins me to share her story of losing her husband to cancer only four months after his diagnosis. Kim’s journey of grief continues but so does her story of faith in an always faithful God. Faith can often be misplaced in things or people, but you’ll hear in today’s conversation of a faith that is full and blessed because our God is still good, even and always in grief and loss.

Join the Friend to Friend team as we share how God is meeting us each in our own deepest needs – speaking truth from His Word to our hearts. God desires for each of us to be both physically and spiritually well! In a time when both secular and humanistic thinking threaten to drown us in depression, fear and anxiety it is imperative, as Christians, that we guard our easily deceived hearts with truth! God has a plan and His plan is working! Part of that plan is conforming us to His image. Look for the lessons, friends, and lean into Christ!

This LIVE Bible Study is the first of two that I shared on FB during the “shelter at home” order, due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was during this time that I, along with my husband who pastors, wanted to ensure that we were staying spiritually connected, although socially distanced. I invited podcast listeners to join me and the ladies of SRBC for our monthly Bible study online. In case you missed it, I invite you to listen today as I share hope from God’s Word, “Clinging To Truth In Chaos.”

Join me, your host, Jessica Smallwood and the podcast team as we look back at how the podcast began and share how God has used the podcast in our lives and the lives of listeners. We praise God together at how the podcast is being used to reach women around the world and in our local communities. Listen in for exciting news about future episodes online and in person! It has been a great adventure and we thank you, listeners, for joining us on this journey! Invite a friend to join us for future episodes, full of hope for our hearts and help from His Word!

Episode 21 | Motherhood: God’s Greenhouse For Growth. Join me and 5 other guests as we share how motherhood has been a greenhouse of growth – a place of fruit and thorns, sowing and reaping, purging and cutting back. And for what purpose? To be grown in His likeness – our Shepherd and Savior, the Master Gardener, for in leading our children we become students led by His hand.

Friends, in sharing these stories, I hope to give you the opportunity to say, “What?! You too? I thought I was the only one!” What I like to call “me too” moments. You are not alone and when days are long and you don’t feel like you measure up, don’t forget to look up. Look up to our Savior who has promised to equip us for the journey if we will walk in His ways and in His spirit, instead of our tired flesh.  Look behind to younger mothers looking for help and encouragement and look ahead to wiser mothers, further down the road, for the same hope.  And friends, if motherhood is not a road you’re traveling, I hope these stories will give insight for how to pray for those you know doing their best, to mother their children well.

Friend to Friend LIVE “The World Needs Who You Were Created To Be”

Bonus Episode | Jennifer Beil, my close friend and the Media Director at the Friend to Friend Podcast, shares how God has taught her to see her daughter’s diagnosis, Aicardi Syndrome, through the eyes of her Ever-Faithful, Loving Heavenly Father.

Episode 20 | “Special Needs for a Special Purpose” Join me and my guests as they share how God has met them in the darkest of times, even silently questioning, “What did I do to deserve this? What did I do wrong?”. My guests share how God has in turn whispered words of love and has displayed His mighty works in their own lives and the lives of others touched by their children with special needs. John 9:1-5 plainly displays that God desires to use frail humanity as a platform to display the works of God. Special needs are for a special purpose, whether those needs manifest themselves through physical handicaps, emotional challenges or personal weaknesses.

Friend to Friend LIVE: Clinging to Truth in Chaos

“Home Is Where the Heart Is”, a feel-good phrase for sure, but a phrase that gives me food for thought. If home is where the heart is then I must ask, “Where is my heart?” the Bible says that out of the heart is the issues of life, therefore I must guard my heart. “From what”, you ask? From anything or anyone that would seek to take the place of my Savior. Today, my guest Missy Shook, shares how God has taught her to find joy, safety and contentment in Christ alone. She shares how God’s call to be a missionary to Thailand began lessons of trust, dependance and contentment in Christ.

Bonus Episode | Today, March the 8th, women across the world will recognize International Women’s Day. A day largely devoted to promoting women’s rights and equality.  I am thankful for the right to vote, respect for women in the workplace and the ability to be heard. But I’m also careful to recognize that lies can be wrapped in truth and what some see as good intentions to bring about change can easily lead to great sin when not grounded in the truth of God’s Word. As a born-again Christian woman, I choose to celebrate today who I am in Christ: A daughter of the King, a City set on a hill, a Voice for My Savior, A Help-Meet, A Mother, Daughter, Sister and Friend. I am seen, known and loved by the One who most matters.

In Today’s episode, “Yet Not I But Christ: The Phenomenal Stories of Fanny Crosby and the Little Servant Girl”, my guest, Wendy Burks, shares the stories of two women who’s lives said, “Not I, but Christ.” Two women who’s influence still reaches us today – the influence of the Gospel, and that, my friend, is a legacy of womanhood worth celebrating!

My guest, Tara Beil, shares how God met her in the hard place of waiting and about the lessons learned during this time that she now deems most valuable. Tara refers to this season of waiting as a “pressure cooker” of life that brought truth to the surface. It was while in this waiting room that she also found herself in the company of anxiety and depression. Anxiety disorders are the most common of mental illnesses that affect more than 40 million adults in America today, and of those adults, up to half suffer also from depression. My guest shares how she found hope and help in the Word of God and people God.

On today’s episode, “Loving and Learning: Celebrating 58 Years of Marriage,” you’ll hear the story of how a marriage can be both faithful and fruitful. Marriage can far exceed our limited expectations even in a world full of heartbreak, rising divorce and often unclear pictures of God’s plan for marriage. My guests have a marriage that shines brightly and not because of two perfect people who said “I do”, but because of two people who daily recognize how much they need God’s help.

Part 2

So often the month of February, can lend itself to celebrating love or grieving the loss of it.  Join me, as my guest, Amy Vassak, shares her story of loss and how God has used her loss to teach her the greatest lessons of mercy, justice, forgiveness and grace. Whether listeners are grieving the loss of a loved one or grieving over a broken relationship, it’s my prayer that today’s episode will point listeners to hope and healing in Christ. Our hope does not lie in apologies or even restored relationships, but in God’s mercy and in His grace!

Dealing With My Family’s Divorce by Amy Vassak

Available today on the Friend to Friend Podcast: Episode 14, Allowing Your Past to Strengthen Your Future. Home. A word that for many provokes thoughts of peace, comfort and love. An institution created by God and for God to be seen in our relationships with one another. And yet we know that since the first home in Adam’s Garden, sin wreaked havoc and heartache that only continues to perpetuate today. And yet Christ came and will come again, reminding us that the hope of our futures do not lie in an upbringing untouched by hurt or sin. Our hope lies in Christ and in his ability to redeem and restore sinners.

Join me as my guest, Lara Harrison, shares how her past, touched by an alcoholic father and divorce, affected her relationship with God and how God met her in the hard places of bitterness and jealousy.  We discuss how her broken home as a child both hindered and helped her desire to have a home of her own and how God has used brokenness to strengthen her marriage and home for the better, today.

As a new year approaches, I often find myself “spring cleaning” in January. It’s “out with the old and in with the new”, as I put away Christmas decor and look for new ways to organize new toys that have been added to our home. As I do this though, I see another place in need of attention. A deeper need of my heart that if left unchecked can become a place of chaos and a cluttered mess. A new year causes me to reflect on the year left behind and look forward to the hope of what is to come in the next. Cleaning and organizing my home is good but its the spiritual “spring cleaning” of my heart that is best. And what better place to start than in the heart of my words.

Join me today as my guest, Francie Taylor, shares how she has learned to recognize the powerful influence of the tongue both publicly and privately, at home and in all relationships. She also shares how the most powerful use of our words- sharing the Gospel, brought her to Christ during a job interview! Francie is an author of several books, a frequent speaker at women’s conferences and the founder of Keep the Heart Ministries. You will find her transparent about her own short comings and honest about the truth of God. I was both encouraged and convicted by our conversation and know that you will be blessed too! Happy listening, friends!

If your home is anything like mine, music plays a big role, not only at Christmas but all throughout the year. Music is such a powerful tool with the ability to set the spirit of an environment and even change the attitude of one’s heart.

I’ve asked my guests today to share with us the story of how their ministry began, how they navigate choices as a team and also how many of their songs were born out of both personal tragedies and triumphs.

There’s a song to be sung, my friends! May it be a song of praise, worship and thanksgiving to our great Savior, in even the lowest of valleys and the highest of mountain tops.

Join me, your host, Jessica Smallwood and our media director at Friend to Friend, Jennifer Beil, as we share 12 Days of Christmas: A Few of Our Favorite Things. In this episode, we’ll share this year’s favorite prayer promises, Bible verses and how we’ve learned to keep our families focused on Christ in our homes at Christmas time. We share lots of favorites from food and music to kid quotes and friends! We hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording! Grab some presents to wrap and something warm to drink! Happy listening friends!

*Keep in mind that we recorded both audio and video during this episode! Starting today, we will release one video at Friend to Friend on FB every day, concluding on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas, listeners!

I’ve invited Wendy Burks back to the podcast to share more phenomenal stories of women who chose faith over fear. Women who chose to be victorious rather than a victim! Today, you’ll hear the story of Rosa Parks – a woman who knew the strength of meekness, that actions truly do speak louder than words. Also of Sarah Edwards – a wife, mother and a Pastor’s wife. A woman who found God in dark days of discouragement. Days that propelled her to write of renewed love for her Savior.

The Holiday Season is upon us! Thanksgiving! Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year…or is it really? Many can attest to the fact that our expectations for picturesque Thanksgiving meals or “White Christmas” Celebrations are often met with the all too familiar enemy of sin. An abrupt reminder that we are all sinful people living in a fallen world.

Sinful people, trying to engage in meaningful relationships, can be especially challenging when a holiday is often found celebrated in our homes with people we are “suppose” to love. The Enemy loves nothing more than to divide and destroy. And what better time to do so than a time when we have opportunity to emphasize gratitude, joy and best of all the birth of our Saviour? So, what’s the answer to difficult relationships? Smile and pretend? Painfully endure til the end? Maybe disengage and distance one’s self? Thankfully there is hope and it’s not in the hope that so and so has made other plans this year. It’s a hope rooted in our Saviour and His Word. Join me today to hear my guest, Julie Tarr, share her story of broken relationships, the loss of a parent and how God met her in the hardest moments. Moments of saying goodbye and moments of asking why. She’ll share how God has taught her to place healthy boundaries in difficult relationships, not to hurt but to help. And how God has taught her through these relationships the greatest lessons of love and forgiveness.

My guest Anna Romary, shares how at a time when she envisioned herself dating and preparing for married life, God is teaching her that the truest joy is found in His will, even when it looks different from our greatest desires. The simple act of daily counting her blessings has guarded her heart from complaining, bitterness, and settling for less than God’s best in a culture that lives counter from God’s plan for dating and marriage. Counting her blessings is proving to be a bridge of strength to faith in His perfect plan, timing and a set apart life.

We all experience loss, disappointment and unmet expectations. Our lives play out differently from what we envisioned and we sometimes find ourselves in a space of life that falls short of what we expected. These disappointments can be especially magnified during the holiday season, when giving thanks is expected and joy in Christ is magnified. The Enemy would like nothing more than to use these times to, instead of magnifying our blessings, magnify our lack or less-than idealistic life. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 makes it clear that in every season of life there are both blessings and burdens.

Whatever unmet expectation you’re facing today, I pray that today’s episode, “When God’s Ways Aren’t My Ways: Finding Contentment In Christ”,will be a reminder of hope that in Christ there is nothing we lack, all dreams are fulfilled and our hopes are always satisfied.

God calls all Christians to faithfulness, in all roles and areas of life, but we must carefully guard our hearts as we seek to faithfully serve our Savior. Jenn and I discuss how the Enemy seeks to detour us from faithfully following our Savior through distraction, discouragement and doubt.

Mrs. Jenn will share how God called her husband to plant the New Heights Baptist Church in Albuquerque, NM 16 years ago and how God has taught her the importance of keeping Him first.

Join me on today’s episode of the Friend to Friend podcast, as my friend and fellow church-planter’s wife, Krista Marasco, joins me to discuss our topic of “Rooted In Christ: Trusting God With The Harvest”.

She shares how they planted their first church on the big island of Hilo, Hawaii and how most recently God has used them to plant Rock Point Baptist Church in Mililani on the island of Oahu.

We discuss how although our expectations for church growth often differ from God’s plan, God always exceeds our limited vision of what true growth looks like.

We also discuss the danger of comparison when starting a church and how Krista has learned to guard her heart while trusting God with the Harvest.

Today, my guest, Heather Higgins shares her story of “Rooted In Christ: Reviving a Church and Raising a Family.” She shares how the “team effort” mentality has been their theme in serving God as a family and how she’s learned to recognize that her attitude has powerful influence over her children in ministry and all areas of life.

Join me on today’s first of four episodes that we will share in October, as I introduce this month’s theme at Friend to Friend. Each week in October we will release an episode all about the role of a pastor’s wife and how my guests are carefully and prayerfully navigating this role. Each of the episodes will have the common thread of “Rooted In Christ.” I’ll start the month off by sharing my own testimony of being a church planter’s wife, new to the role of a lead pastor’s wife, “Rooted In Christ: Growing In Grace.”

It’s my prayer that fellow pastor’s wives will be encouraged and strengthened by stories that are both relatable and insightful. And for listeners not married to a pastor, this month’s episodes are just as much for you as they are for her! I promise that in listening to this month’s podcast, you will gain helpful insight in knowing how to better pray for, love and serve alongside your own pastor’s wife.

Join me and my good friend Jennifer Beil, a.k.a. Media Director at the Friend to Friend Podcast, as we share how we came to know Christ and how our relationships with Him have grown and changed over time.

Jenn and I both share how God met us in our times of questioning our own salvation and how God removed all doubt. We discuss how God has taught us to not only receive from His Word but to also serve from what we’ve received and what that looks like in our day to day lives.

God has used motherhood and ministry to show us our deepest need – knowing our Savior, our source of strength.

Most importantly, we’ve learned that God’s love is not equally measured by how much Bible we read or how long we pray. His love for us is constant and unchanging. It’s this love with no strings attached that draws me to Him and in return we receive a priceless treasure- a thriving relationship with Christ.

My friend, Michelle Cowling, joins me today on the podcast! She’ll share about her own insecurities as a first-time mom, how her philosophy of motherhood has changed over time and how God has taught her to not only receive grace but to also extend that same grace to her children. We also discuss the important role a mother plays in her son’s life and how that role changes as our children grow. Whether or not you have sons, this episode is for you! Friends and relatives of mothers, I believe this episode will give you insight -equipping you with knowing how to better pray for and graciously walk along side your mom friends. You will find Michelle’s transparency and humble approach to motherhood refreshing and encouraging! If you, like myself and my guest, have sons, then count it as an added bonus! She shares insight and resources from walking the same path of mothering sons. We take time to speak hope and courage to single moms and conclude that a mother’s heart to see her children succeed cannot rest alone in a husband, mentor or “perfect home” but can only truly rest in the heart of her Savior. Happy listening!

While shopping recently, I noticed a sign that said, “Quiet women seldom make history.” I confess I tucked it away, and hid it by a different piece of decor. I recognize that we live in a world dominated by feminist thinking: fighting for equal rights, resisting male authority and shirking Biblical womanhood, but does this mindset truly prevail? Are we entirely dominated by this movement of unbiblical thinking? I think not. It’s my belief that while quiet women may not find themselves in the spotlight its the quiet women that more than make history, shape history.

It’s my belief that there is a remnant of women quietly pursuing the rights of other, and quietly embracing Biblical womanhood as friends, daughters, sisters, wives, mothers and teachers of good things, all under the umbrella of God-ordained authority. Women who are respected, loved and full of confidence because their confidence is not rooted in their own identity but in their Heavenly Father who created them for His purpose.

So, the question must be asked, “What makes a woman truly great?” Well, the answer lies in who holds the measuring stick. Women like Ann Judson, and Darlene Diebler Rose are scarcely remembered by the world we live in today. Proverbs 31:30 says, “ Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, shall be praised.” I believe these women and others, caught the eyes of their Savior and captivated the attention of the God of Heaven as the stories of their lives quietly played out.

As adults, we have a great and delicate responsibility to teach purity to those following behind us. We live in a world that shouts everything but purity. And if we’re not walking closely to God, asking for His wisdom, we can easily steer away from teaching our children and teenagers purity and holiness for fear of what others will label us as. We can also go so far to teach purity that we hurt others with our standards and convictions, forgetting to couple grace and truth. It’s a balancing act for sure. We want to reach the world, but not be of the world. We want to be a light shining bright, not dimmed by sin, drawing men to Christ. But living pure in today’s culture will prove difficult at times. But friend, there is hope! Is it worth it? Yes! And can we pursue holiness and still lovingly lead people to Christ? Absolutely.

The Bible has clear examples of generational history and history often proves that as generations continue, Christians have a tendency to decline in succeeding to pass on their faith, let alone produce a generation that thrives in their faith… But God is always greater than our failures. All through the Bible we see God looking to use a lineage, a family, a father to trace His hand and point His children to God’s purpose and plan. And God still desires to do this today!

Two reasons for today’s podcast are this: 1. To look back to a godly heritage and learn and 2. To look to one couple’s example of continuing in that heritage.  Mark and Lacey would be the first to tell you they are far from perfect and it is never our goal to point you to perfect people. But to our Savior, who has the power to change lives, mold hearts and His ability to use the powerful influence of the home to reach generations of lives with the Word of God.

It’s my hope that second and third generation Christians will be encouraged to continue in their godly heritage and to not take for granted the price that others have paid to pave the way. And may new believers have their faith increased for building foundations for future generations to come.

Friendship is a gift!! But if we’re not careful we can allow hang-ups like false expectations, comparison, trials and social media to keep us from having thriving relationships. Join me and four close friends as we discuss these topics and most importantly about how our relationship with Christ is truly the key to a successful friendship!

JoBeth Hooker has been married to her husband Robert Hooker for 41 years. God has blessed them with six daughters, all of whom are serving the Lord with families of their own today.  They have 26 grandchildren with one on the way!  She is passionate about speaking Gospel truth to women and God has used Mrs. Hooker as both an author and a speaker. God called her husband to pastor Calvary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN three years ago and Mrs. Hooker faithfully serves alongside him, leading women’s Bible studies and writing curriculum for their children’s ministry.

I’m thankful for the insight and advice Mrs. Hooker shares  with us in today’s episode, “Looking Back: Hindsight Advice.”  She speaks to the heart of the matter as a young Christian, wife, mother and friend. Ultimately it is the matter of our heart toward God. She has a heart of love, understanding and biblical insight that is evident in our conversation. I pray you will listen with an open heart and an eagerness to learn.

You will be blessed and helped by her transparency and willingness to share with us her own mistakes and regrets. Happy Listening, Friends! May you have many “Me too” moments!

*The sound quality will improve as you continue listening! We are growing in knowledge of how to best record and in the process of recording this episode we finally found out what works best! Thank you for your patience as we learn!

Today’s bonus episode is “Me Too” moments: The Heart Behind the Podcast, co-hosted with my good friend Jennifer Beil. We wanted to set aside an episode to share with you, just that, our heart behind doing this and our stories behind the message. Jennifer is married to Brett Beil, an assistant pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Wildomar, CA.  They have four children: Jackson is 12, Judson is 10, Blake is 8, and their precious special needs daughter, Brooklyn, is 5.  The Beils were missionaries for five years in Ghana, West Africa, where the Lord used them to start a Christian school that is still running today.  Jennifer recently started a photography business, Brave Little Soul Photography.

Introduction

I hope you’ll join me as I share friend-to-friend conversations with women who’ve been there, done that, and can point us to our Saviour who walked them through it.  Not only do I hope you will listen, but I hope you will pray and consider being a part by sharing your weaknesses and failures in light of God’s grace and His mercy.  It’s my desire to have conversations with women who are meeting God in the mess of their living room or in the mess of their heart.  Women who have met Christ in the center of their chaos.  Women who have followed God through their valley and are still holding tight to His hand. Women who pursue friendship through extending their own, strengthening relationships with both believers and unbelievers all for the sake of the Gospel.
